I totally agree with you! Some better solutions I came across are Lucene ( <A HREF="http://jakarta.apache.org/lucene/index.html" title="apache.org">Lucene</a apache.org> ) and the LuMriX (<A HREF="http://www.lumrix.net/" title="lumrix.net">LuMriX</a lumrix.net> ) search engines.
Both written in Java and that's not the only reason why I prefer them over htdig.
