The binary versions of OpenOffice and Firefox are available in portage. No compilation necessary.
Also, Gnomesu is included. It just has not been setup for use in the shortcut to Porthole from the menu. Simply open the shortcut in the menu and add "gnomesu" to the front of the application line.
