You're looking at new systems, or installing Linux on a box that used to run a different OS, and you're wondering if all the components -- video, modem, Ethernet, sound -- will work on Linux.
Umm.. am I missing something here? The system doesn't have Linux on it, but yet you go on to talk about how to use Linux commands to determine what hardware is on it?!?!?
Perhaps an easier route would be to get Knoppix and umm.. boot that.. does X come up? Does sound work? Can you access the CD drive? alrighty.. looks like a winner.
