Compilation Time

I've been using Gentoo for several years now, and you are right about the compilation time being a downside. However, for some of the larger packages there are also binary versions available so if you don't care about those extra microseconds, you can use this option. I think they are usually suffixed with -bin in the name. The -k and -g options may also be useful. I'll even admit I've done it a few times myself. (Ever compiled openoffice from source? :)
