I think you should have disconnected the box at once when you knew it was cracked. Changing the password or removing unknown users might leave you vulnerable for retaliation immediately.
As long as a cracker thinks he still owns the box, the box is still useful to him. As soon as it no longer useful he could retaliate by formatting the box or do other harm to it.
Granted, in this case the cracker exposed himself so he wasn't using the box for himself.
