It doesn't have any license/patent problems associated with it and works better.

Better is ofcourse if you use OpenBSD (the people who created CARP) for your router to the outside-world, because I wouldn't be surprised if it's a firewall to... as a firewall, OpenBSD supports replication of firewall-state, you can even load-balance those machines...
Why not CARP ?
