I added the following lines to my<nobr> <wbr></nobr>/etc/inittab with fairly good results:
# WindowsCE/PPC pseudo-getty
ce:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/synce-serial-start
So far it seems to work extremely well, with one caveat: the PDA needs to be left unplugged for a minute or two in order for the pppd daemon to recognize that the PDA is gone. I haven't pulled the source down yet, but my first hunch is that there's some kind of delay in the lcp echo requestor before pppd takes it off-line.
