I've been using gentoo for about 8 months with good success, but it took a couple of weeks to get everything working: mouse scroll wheel, sound nvidia kernel and drivers, cedega tweaks etc. Though I didn't mind it very much I feared having to re-install (eventual disk failure or me screwing something up) and do all that over again. Two days ago I ran across VidaLinux and gave the free 1.2 version a try. Portage works nicely and the install identified and configured all my hardware perfectly. (Asus A7n8x-e board with 1900+, fx5200). I did the free install and have since been emerging in packages I need. (As I write I'm installing k3b).
Since using gentoo I can't live without portage. Nothing comes close to it. But I don't want to spend all my time getting my system configured for every little piece of hardware or feature I need if I have to re-install. So far I'm happy with vidalinux 1.2.
Switched from gentoo to vidalinux
