I went away from a Matrox G550 AGP due to many freezes of my system. I'm using NVidia now to my satisfaction. If you go and search for people having trouble with Matrox cards on newer Linux kernels, you'll find a lot of comments. And AFAICT there aren't real solutions available to the problems with those cards.
