If an ebuild (text file explaining portage how a package can be build) is not provided with the main tree, you can create one youself, ask or hire someone and put it in an overlay. Overlays are mini-trees you can maintain yourself, or even find on the net for some applications. This may seem complicated at first, but it's going to save you lot's off time in the long run...
So, tough possible, no need to short out portage and compile manualy.
