I had wanted to use GNOME's built-in support for mounting remote SSH directories as well until I realized that the rest of the system (command line and non-GNOME apps -- Azureus) don't recognize the mount.
I'd imagine that KDE suffers from a similar problem (command line and non-KDE apps -- Azureus) won't recognize the mount.
It really limits the usefulnes of those features for my usage pattern.
