Astronomers need HDR images too. We're not so interested in the response of the eye as simply not discarding information from detectors that have a higher dynamic range than typical image formats.
A commonly used format is FITS, or Flexible Image Transport System. netpbm has converters for this format, and GIMP can open them, but I think they get converted to 24 bit images once they're opened.
I read once that to change this would be a major re-write of the GIMP... is that true? GIMP's scriptability would be very useful for astronomers if it handled HDR images properly.
