The 2-mode input was good for all kinds of terminals that might not have meta keys, but difficult to use today (and unnecessary)<nobr> <wbr></nobr>..(SNIP).. What I'm saying is that it's unnecessary for its intended use.
That might be how you use it. Personally I hate emacs. I like a moded editor. Someone once said to me the only real difference between vim and emacs is do you like modes or not. If you do, use vim. If you don't, use emacs. I work faster in vim.
