It is possible to boot into an already installed SuSE installation via YaST. After the language selection and license agreement, click on the 'Other<nobr> <wbr></nobr>...' button, instead of 'New Install' or 'Upgrade'.
I dont know why the firewire port is not recognized on your iPod model. There were some firewire kernel driver changes related to iPod after 10.1 was released. Maybe they this issue. All 10.2 kernels have these changes already. SLES10 may work too.
