A usefule extension to the standard outline mode is outline-magick.el by Carsten Dominik. It's a minor mode which provides enhanced commands for toggling the visibility of subelements and for editing the tree: promoting and demoting subtrees, moving the subtrees around, etc. -- Dmitri Minaev
