i think this is a good brainstor.
i absolutely hate it but it is clear that ONE SIZE FITS ALL is never going to happen on the desktop.
thus we need to focus on giving users a sensible default the 'gnome way', but making the panels powerfull enough and flexible enough to allow users to create their own workflow.
