I use this system daily to tunnel my traffic over my wifi connection at home, to my home server, and then on the the Internet. Also when I am at a remote location connected to unencrypted wifi. So yes, this tunnels traffic over the internet, but was written from the point of view of protecting yourself while using wifi.
