That was the conclusion I came to when I tried to install 64-bit linux on my shiny AMD-64 (with SATA) around 18 months ago. I tried numerous 64-bit distributions that had so many problems, but Gentoo worked great (aside from the expected issues such as Flash). I assume this was partially because of the source compilation that is part of normal Gentoo use. IIRC, Slackware had a 64-bit version that worked well sooner than most others, too.
