Above is an example of the UUID's Ubuntu is using in Edgy Eft's<nobr> <wbr></nobr>/etc/fstab to identify hardware. Why they are needed is no longer the issue.
The vast number of available addresses in alpha numeric strings this long, far exceed their stated purpose, and could number every harddrive on the planet many times over.
It can be meant as nothing other than a "Global Unique Identifier". Not just for local hardware. As yet, none of the posters have addressed the need for strings this long. At best, it's unneeded code bloat.
