What Is ODT

Posted by: Anonymous Coward on September 28, 2006 08:20 AM
OpenDocument Text (ODT) is the new standardized file format for archiving and exchanging word processing documents. There are similar OpenDocument formats for spreadsheets and presentations as well. These formats have been implemented in such office suites as OpenOffice.org, KOffice, AbiWord, TextMaker, and some of the IBM workplace products. They have not yet been adopted by Microsoft, Corel/WordPerfect, or IBM's Lotus SmartSuite, despite all three having been involved in the process that created the standard. However, there are a couple of converters being worked on to move files to and from Microsoft formats to OpenDocument Formats (ODF). In some areas, government agencies are beginning to mandate the use of ODF formats for their documents. See http://consortiuminfo.org/standardsblog/ for an ongoing discussion of these are related issues.
