But what I do is save as a plain text file so I can run this and the rest of the writer's workbench tools. Then I cut and paste back to the OO file.

After all it is the content you are interested in. That is why we piped through tools such as deroff back in the days of old.

Maybe, since ODF is XML, there is a deXML filter one could pipe the odt files through.

Actually, saving content as text lets one use RCS or similar to track the file changes. Handy when you want to reuse your content.
