After trying Compiz with Suse 10.1, I'm still not convinced that any of the eye candy is useful, with the possible exception of the rotating cube, and the ability to span desktops with a single window. As for the rest, I really don't see the point.
The part I *really* don't like, however, is how some programs become partially transparent, leaving them very hard to use. This may be more of a problem in games than productivity software, but it is still annoying.
In general, this is a nice idea, but I think I'll wait till the dust settles and version 1.0 has been released (of either fork) before I make final judgement. In the meantime, I'm sticking with a standard window manager.
