I noticed that eGroupware supports MySQL as a database backend. Of course this means that although you can sanely deploy it (Oracle or PostgreSQL), you can also install it on MySQL 4 (which will do fun things like truncate numbers for you), and in which case you get what you deserve...
Anyway, best of luck to your project. I would just suggest you document that running an accounting system on MySQL is not exactly advisable.
