Give <a href="http://www.sabayonlinux.org/" title="sabayonlinux.org">Sabayon Linux</a sabayonlinux.org> a try. Its based on Gentoo but has a more friendly installer on the live cd. The live DVD has almost every package you can want too. Still not for the Linux novice, but a nice way to get a more-than-basic Gentoo desktop installed quickly (some familiar with Gentoo call it a "Stage 4" install). All the tips from the article still apply, as once you are up and running, its just like any other Gentoo install.
