For me, the point of running any Linux distro is "learning" how system works from a kind of different view OR "solving" some particular problem/task.
According to your second question/statement, gaining performance of 1% is sometimes very important, and i am sure that you do understand what I am talking about, but that percentage is much higher, trust me, and give it a chance.
