The mh tools have handled POP, Kerberized POP, etc. for a long, long time. The GNU mailutils version of inc also handles any mail source its library knows, including IMAP. And you can run GUI tools when you're on a fast connection, Emacs MH mode on a medium-speed connection, or just use the text tools. You quickly learn to love sequences. I'd advise skimming the MH book (<a href="http://rand-mh.sourceforge.net/book/" title="sourceforge.net">http://rand-mh.sourceforge.net/book/</a sourceforge.net>) before deciding against MH.

nmh handles POP just fine.
