No web interface I've seen provides user comfort of localy run application. It still needs to communicate with server and it's limited by HTML and JavaScript capabilities. Now I use GMail for half a year and I was using several other webmails before (all were worse) and though I quite like it and it has the advantage of providing the same interface from everywhere it definitely isn't as fast, comfortable and configurable as common email clients. I was using several webmails and several email clients both GUI and text-based and all those approaches have some pros and cons.
