1) To install java on Fedora you should do it likes this: <a href="http://www.jpackage.org/installation.php" title="jpackage.org">http://www.jpackage.org/installation.php</a jpackage.org> It adds an extra option to alternatives which enables you to switch between java runtimes.
2) Use the authconfig utility to enable ldap login in fedora/centos/rhel there is a cursus, gtk and commandline version of the program.
