I noticed your comments on needing to copy the images before you could work with them using digiKam.
Use showFoto instead. It's the same viewer/editor you'll find in digiKam, and you can open a specific image or a folder of images from any drive/partition that you have access to (no need to copy them).
I use showFoto instead of digiKam all the time so that I don't need to import the images first.
I like the showFoto/digiKam user interface (before/after view) for many basic tasks (USM, etc.).
