I thought that I would have to copy my images, too, and passed over digikam for a while, but when I reconsidered, I realized that I could set the album directory to the one that I store the photos in. digikam puts a small db file into the root of that directory, otherwise your directories remain unchanged. As for the sideways tabs, konqueror has tabs on the side, as does amarok. Is this so disconcerting? I use digikam almost exclusively for managing my collection (except for extensive editing, when I use gimp and krita), but I have never had to use those tabs at all (I don't tg my photos, but keep them in heirarchical directories with meaningful names and subcategories. The kipi plugins are great and add a lot to the program. I also use gthumb a bit, but digikam is hands-down the best photo application, bar none. And the associated showphoto is a great slideshow and viewer application.
