The comments aren't inherited from the support library, since it was only in recent versions that it used EXIF to store them. Previously they were stored separately from the files (and an option still exists to allow this).
I wasn't dismissing search as useless, by the way - just noting that it wasn't relative to the point about comments not being supported. They're not searchable as they should be, but they *are* supported.
