Good question. I'm not aware of any app that can do automatic renaming of any kind. Digikam, imgSeek, and Picasa all have batch renaming tools, but they must be chosen manually -- which sounds like it is not what you are asking for (though correct me if I'm wrong). As is the case on most other features, imgSeek has the most flexible/powerful implementation of the three.
On the other hand, if you tire of waiting for a solution, anything that you can compose into a script you can bind to a hotkey in GQview.... So if you had a good bash or perl script to perform the metadata-based rename, you could add it to GQview -- it wouldn't be automatic, but it would be a single keypress, which is still better than nothing.
