I second that. Setting up NIS is 5 minutes work and it works out of the box with any unix os. As for management tools it doesn't need much more than vi and make.
As for those great management tools for LDAP: yes please tell me where I can find great opensource tools that will make setting up and maintaining LDAP a 5 minute job since I haven't found any (but to be honnest I didn't have a chance to look for them anymore in the last year or so).
