I run Debian GNU/Linux (unstable), and I have a small network of machines at home. I've been administering GNU/Linux for about 10 years and using Debian for most of that time. Over the last couple of years, I have tried on a couple of different occasions to get LDAP working instead of NIS.
Everyone knows that LDAP is the next thing and that NIS is obsolete.
Each time, however, after following all of the instructions that I could find, I ended up with a system that didn't work. So I reverted to NIS, which is trivial to set up.
Perhaps I'm just not smart enough. Or perhaps it's harder on Debian than on other systems to set up. Or perhaps I just didn't try hard enough.
I still use NIS for my home machines.

Anyway, that's my experience.
