In the article you give wrong information. Computer control is NOT required to operate any digital mode. Just because the software has the capability to control the radio, does not mean computer control of the radio is required at all. BTW, I use a TS-530S here for PSK, SSTV, and RTTY. My only connections to the rig are from my laptop's headphone jack to the mic audio (via an audio transfromer) of the radio, and from the headphone jack of the radio to the line-in on the laptop (again via an audio transformer). I use VOX to key the radio when transmitting (all system sounds are disabled). This setup will work for any digital (sound card) mode that I know of with no hardware changes. You need to distinguish between what is actually required and what is optional.

That said, if I had a more modern radio, I would prefere to use any available audio in/out connections and PTT options available through the radio's accessory connections, as I used to do when I owned an Icom 706MKII several years ago. I also had the rig control interface, and used it with the software that was available.
