Autopackage is going nowhere because it's a solution in search of a problem. Lots of people groan about how hard it is to install packages in Linux. However, the reality is that installing packages in Linux is, for the most part, remarkably simple. Often the complaint is that it's hard to install apps that are not packaged for your distro, but many apps (Google Earth, Skype, Moneydance to name a few) show that anybody with some decent shell-scripting skills can write a sh script that installs a binary package for non-root use. The current Linux package distribution methods work fine, and that's why Autopackage has gotten nowhere.
