Autopackage is not the only project in this area - Klik currently offers a different technical approach to the problem: <URL:http://klik.atekon.de/>. I believe that the lead developer participated in the recent summit on Linux packaging.
I was also surprised to see no links in the article to either this discussion: <URL:http://www.licquia.org/archives/2005/03/27/au topackage-considered-harmful/>, or the original analysis of Autopackage by Joey Hess: <URL:http://kitenet.net/~joey/blog/entry/autopacka ge_designed_by_monkeys.html/>
Joey Hess is a lead developer of the Debian installer, as well as Alien and debconf. The discussion threads on the Fedora development mailing list regarding Autopackage installing into /usr/ follow similar lines.
Not entirely balanced article
