I think the first post summed things up perfectly in terms of the blind ignorance from those of us that have been using Linux for years and are stuck in our ways.

Blind ignorance from experienced users, or blind adherence to the standards set by MS by newbies? Aptitude and/or Synaptic are not hard to manage, but they are different from MS.exe. You do have to set up your repositories, but if it's not done automatically during the install it won't take more than 5 or 10 minutes to do it. And then you have access to 1000's of programs, either from the web repos or the CDs.

If you took a true newbie, someone who had never used MS before and offered them a choice between:

a) you can install anything you find with the click of a button, but you have to find it yourself and there's no guarantee that it won't infect your system with malware. You will very rarely need to install anything from source, which is good because it is really, really difficult to do so in most cases

and

b) you have to follow a few instructions to set up your system, and then you have immediate access to 1000s of programs from a single, trusted source. You may, on rare occasions, need to install something from source. Most of the tools you need to do this are already in place, but you may need to get some help from more experienced users to get it done properly.

do you really think the choice is so clearly in favour of the point and click?
