You critize Autopackage on your personal and additionally false assumption that the "original project goal was to provide SELF-CONTAINED Windows-like installers for Linux systems".
Instead, they may wanted to create a mix of self-contained installer and network setup tools because that seemed the best way to deal with the problems found on the Linux platform. It's not Autopackage's fault if it wouldn't not satisfy your personal requirements.
This is just like criticizing cars because they don't fly.
