"0installs needs some command line magic or a drag'n'drop operation."

The UI is from whatever environment you use. Command-line users type commands, ROX and Xfce users drag-and-drop (because that's how those desktops work).

I'm sure GNOME users could set it up to work when you click in epiphany, for example, if they don't like DnD.

"The second problem is its total dependency on the network: I may be mistaken but there seems to be no way to burn a few applications on a CD and give that to your friend."

The Zero2Bundle application will create a self-contained ROX application directory for a program containing all its libraries (those available through Zero Install anyway), which you can put on a CD:

<a href="http://rox.sourceforge.net/desktop/Zero2Bundle" title="sourceforge.net">http://rox.sourceforge.net/desktop/Zero2Bundle</a sourceforge.net>

Even better would be a version that extracted the dependencies back into the cache, so that they could be shared properly. No reason why it shouldn't work.
