I think the operative word here is "tries". Autopackage "tries" to provide a solution but implementing the whole thing in shell scripts and stuffing away the metadata all over the place is not the way to go about doing this. Autopackage didn't fail because it was a bad idea, it failed because it was a bad implementation of a mediocre idea.

If you read Joey Hess's post keeping this in mind you will see he actually didn't have a problem with autopackage as such. He was actually seeing about adding support in alien for autopackage (which would allow you to convert them to<nobr> <wbr></nobr>.debs) but got frustrated at the way autopackage is built. The fact that he was seeing about adding alien support certainly does mean he didn't reject it out of hand.

It is also interesting to note that autopackage does not require distro support. The distros are actually the last place to look here, because autopackage caters directly to the end user. In the end it was the end user that rejected it. Had it been so good it would have become more popular and people would still be updating their packages. Blaming the distros is just plain wrong since they have got little to do with autopackages' demise.
