Slackware's pkgtools works for me.
No dependency hell, no convoluted jargon and best of all, easy to roll your own. Everything on my system is packaged and installed thru pkgtools, so its logged in<nobr> <wbr></nobr>/var/log/packages and readily maintained/updated/removed.
