I doubt that *I* would have heard of Gringotts, if there hadn't been someone who took the time to duplicate some of its functionality. A few hours of his time, coupled with your comment, opens eyes to the possibilities that are out there.
Besides, managing your programming assets isn't a feature of the open-source model; it's part of that *other* model... you know, the one the evil empire uses... and they have gotten so bogged down trying to maintain their dominant position that they can't get around to *coding* anymore.
All things considered, FOSS is fine the way it is.
