I agree that there is not enough testing of free software. Part of the problem is that users are not encouraged enough to do this.
Linux distros make public releases of beta and release candidates in the same way that they make final releases.
What they should instead do is make these testing versions *really* available for testing-- and what that would entail is having testers register to obtain their beta for testing and have as part of those releases a simple gui app for people to use to daily write out any bugs that they encountered in a way that can be easily tracked and uploaded to bugzilla.
As it is betas and RCs are mostly used by people who just can't wait for the next release, instead of being used for it's real purpose-- to test the software for bugs.
