Perhaps a better alternative to some of the mentioned solutions would be <a href="http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2007/03/13/222387/encrypted-laptop-hard-drives-arrive-from-seagate.htm" title="computerweekly.com">Seagate's encrypted hard drives</a computerweekly.com> which are finally hitting the retail channel. If they become widely adopted, these drives will make many of these encrypted file systems redundant.
