developing a full blown editing application is needed but unless you have the resources to do it right, it's pointless. resources need to come from many industry and non-industry users to be useful, one input is well, one-sided.
Will it happen? yes, someday.
As far as open source, no lies. They are very clear on how they release their code and everybit of it goes to the users, something you won't see from other companies. Will they ever release completely open? It's been stated as an intention when the timing is right.
