The right kind of schedule depends, of course, on the type and scale of a software project. There is no single schedule ( 1 year / release) suitable for all projects.
Something like Wine may do well with a relatively rapid release schedule while something like 2 years / releasemight suit, for example, Debian/GNU Linux.
