I love my Squeezebox (I still use my old SliMP3 too), and in fact right now I'm streaming from Slimserver (at home) to Amarok (at work), but Slimserver is a little clunky if you're not using their hardware. The non-hardware options are to use one of the handful of programs that emulate the hardware (I hacked a textual UI into one of them), or to stream it like Internet radio. In the latter case, you need to use the web interface to control it, in addition to running a program to actually play the stream.
It would be nice if the web interface included an option to stream straight to a Flash player embedded in the page that also gives more immediate control; alas, Flash development on a free-software platform is primitive, so my Flash skills are nearly nonexistent.
It would also be nice if Slimserver could use the MPD protocol to talk to clients, or if the Squeezebox could use MPD as a back-end.
