I think you would like to write "if I install GNU/Linux"
So ... if you have already empty partition you will not lose for sure your data (if you install GNU/Linux into the empty partition ...).
If you have to resize the only one partition you have, then a backup is better (normally you will not lose nothing ... if you don't make a mistake) ... use gparted for doing the resize work
