Philosopher are not at all rare under FOSS developers.

Personally I spend the past years with work I consider mostly a philosophical theme: re-model the basic ethical ground of a consitutional state (the Askemos project).
So mostly rewrite in the Scheme language what the enlightenment philosopher expressed in human speech. To support the work I founded a FOSS company.

Let me tell you two things: a) the most support I get from philosophers, e.g. Prof. Hans-Ulrich Niemitz (ethics) ordered a lawyers expertise to evaluate Askemos from legal point of view (and I'm very proud of the results, which are in short: it's better evidence than you get from cryptographic signatures). And b) to secure some public funding we must re-frame it posing to be a technical theme. That's the hard part of the job.
